History of the Firm
The firm of Hulton Patchell was formed on 1 July 1995 when Murray Patchell joined Ian Hulton in partnership following the retirement of Keith Hinton. The firm had its foundations in the former practices of Keith Hinton and Hinton & Hulton going back to 1970.
The partnership was corporatised (Hulton Patchell Limited) on the 1st April 2002. Over the past 30 years we have been providing accounting and associated services to Rotorua and surrounding communities. John McRae joined the firm as an associate in 2009.
In 2013 the firm merged with national and international firm Deloitte, with Murray and John remaining as Partners to continue the practice in Rotorua. At this point in time, Ian Hulton retired after 31 years in public practice.
Deloitte Rotorua now comprises a team of 23 including 6 chartered accountants, other qualified accountants and experienced staff, particularly in the area of Trust and Maori Authority administration and management.
The core business of our firm is to provide a comprehensive package of accounting, secretariat, share registry, property management, and taxation and business advisory services to Maori Authorities. In addition, services are provided to a number of schools, and a variety of commercial and private clients.
Deloitte Rotorua provides accountancy and secretariat services to a large number of successful iwi organisations and Maori trusts in the Rotorua and wider Bay of Plenty / Central Plateau area. A key focus of the firms' approach that has proved successful is to provide the full back-end support to client's office administration to compliment the front-end management support that is also regularly provided. Many clients find that outsourcing this work ensures that they only pay for what they need and they can access skillsets and resources on demand without having to carry the overheads associated with staffing. This approach has enable Deloitte Rotorua to develop a high level of competent service providers that are available on call for clients. It is particularly important when organisations have lean budgets and variable needs to have expertise at all levels on tap.
The firm is an Approved Training Organisation to provide training and mentoring to staff studying for full Chartered Accountant status.
Through Hulton Patchell Support Services Limited (a subsidiary of Deloitte) we provide a variety of services including leasing and management of commercial and residential property (such as liaising with landlords and tenants, rental collection, arranging repairs and maintenances, administration). We also offer trustees services such as acting as co-trustee with clients or custodian trustee for assets.
