The Owhata 2B Trust is established by Trust Order dated 3 February 1993 under S438 of the Maori Affairs Act. The Owhata 7 Trust is established by Trust Order dated 28 April 1988 under S438 of the Maori Affairs Act. They both continue today as Ahu Whenua Trusts dated 9 June 2005 under the Te Ture Whenua Maori Act 1993.
Although both trusts are separate trusts with their own assets, shareholders and trustees, they have operated together as a partnership for many years. The trust’s lands are adjacent to each other and they have been farmed together to provide a better economic return than would be achievable were they each operated separately.
The trust’s principal assets are the land blocks at Owhata, on Owhata Road. Owhata 2B comprises 21.2359ha while Owhata 7 comprises 7.4816. The combined blocks are leased by the trusts to a maize grower and there is also a residential tenancy.
